Medical Assistant

 

Classification: NON-EXEMPT
Status & Schedule: FULL-TIME, generally Mon – Fri, 8am – 5pm

Job Purpose: Medical Assistant

This position is an integral role in delivering high-quality patient care, performing administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of a physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by physician.

Qualifications, Education, & Experience

·         Minimum High School Diploma or GED
·         BLS Certification preferred
·         One year experience in a medical office, clinic or healthcare administration setting preferred
·         One year experience in customer service-related position preferred
·         Certified Medical Assistant or equivalent preferred, or willing to obtain within one year of hire
·         Bilingual preferred

Essential Responsibilities: Medical Assisting

1.       Patient Intake and Triage: Greet patients, obtain their medical history, chief complaints, and vital signs. Prioritize patient needs based on urgency and communicate effectively with healthcare providers.

2.       Assist with Examinations: Prepare examination rooms, equipment, and supplies for patient consultations or procedures. Assist healthcare providers during physical examinations, minor surgical procedures, and diagnostic tests.

3.       Patient Education: Provide patients with information about their medical conditions, prescribed medications, treatment plans, and follow-up care instructions. Educate patients on preventive healthcare measures and lifestyle modifications.

4.       Medication Administration: Administer medications, injections, vaccines, and immunizations as directed by healthcare providers. Ensure accurate dosage, proper technique, and patient safety during medication administration.

5.       Specimen Collection and Processing: Collect specimens such as blood, urine, and sputum for laboratory testing. Ensure proper labeling, documentation, and transportation of specimens according to established protocols.

6.       Point-of-Care Testing: Perform point-of-care tests such as blood glucose monitoring, urinalysis, and rapid strep tests. Record test results accurately and report abnormal findings to healthcare providers promptly.

7.       Medical Records Management: Maintain electronic health records (EHR) or paper charts, documenting patient encounters, assessments, treatments, and follow-up care. Ensure confidentiality, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory requirements such as HIPAA.

8.       Assist with Procedures: Assist healthcare providers with procedures such as wound care, electrocardiography (ECG), pulmonary function tests, and spirometry. Prepare patients, equipment, and sterile field as needed.

9.       Patient Safety and Comfort: Ensure a safe and comfortable environment for patients during their clinic visit or procedure. Monitor patients for signs of distress, adverse reactions, or complications and provide appropriate assistance and support.

10.   Equipment Maintenance: Clean, disinfect, and sterilize medical instruments and equipment following infection control guidelines. Perform routine maintenance checks and report any equipment malfunctions or deficiencies.

11.   Administrative Duties: Schedule patient appointments, manage phone calls, and process paperwork such as insurance forms, referrals, and prior authorizations. Assist with billing, coding, and insurance claims processing as needed.

12.   Confidentiality: Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures as applicable to area(s) of responsibility. Handle confidential information and materials appropriately and maintain a secure work area
